Interesting, the other day I was just reading this article on Bob Briscoe:

He should be given more credit for his refugee work.
I think we all disagree with his views on Zionism, but its important to remember it was a somewhat different creature back then, in light of genocide in Europe and Russia, and Briscoe and his man Jabotinsky were also moderates. Wasn’t it one of the Behans who said the Israelis had no greater supporters than the Irish (or something like)
