Interesting point which from the outside certainly seems spot on. Got to admit the supposed ‘discipline’ of some parties particularly but not only the supposed ‘orthodox’ ones is often a bit overstated. In the WP my sense was that the deal breaker was often the issue of the North and PIRA than anything economic (there was a broad range of left views there) or even attitudes to the USSR which were from talking to other comrades ranging from absolute identification with to something close to a rather contemptuous attitude ie that it was a distraction and hardly relevant. Which was a little tricky for me because I didn’t much tow the party line in relation to the north. I just didn’t discuss it and went on the marches calling for the release of miscarriage of justice prisoners etc,anyhow.
