The conference is being held in the INEC all right, but from the televised shots of Gilmore’s speech they appear to have used only part of the auditorium.
On the other hand, they put seating up on the stage behind the leader and seem to have filled it with members of Labour Youth who formed a backdrop for the broadcast.
I suspect the effect may have been counterproductive: the group that was seen by viewers was too youthful to be a natural cross-section of delegates.
The contrast was striking when an occasional shot was shown of the audience in the body of the hall: the photogenic few seated behind the leader seemed to be under 25, the bulk of the delegates in front of him seemed to be over 50.
