That tragic bombing in Belfast in 1973 in the City Centre, was a tragedy not only for those who died and thier families and friends, but for the Republican cause. What happened, happened, it cannot be undone, but we must learn from it and similar tragic events. There is risk in every operation.whether on a building site, a quarry, a trawller or whatever and risk has to be assessed.
The same needs to be done in a military operation. The history of block-buster car-bombs speaks for itself. How could we retain community support when we were killing and maiming civilians.
Down the decades the Republican cause has been seriously damaged by reckless actions. The Viet NLF had a political commisare in each unit who could assess the likely political consequences of an operation. In any campaign, military, civil disobediance or whatever,
tactics without strategy leads to failure.
Car bombing has been proven to be counter-productive, The lessons of history need to be learned.
