It seems to me that Yglesias may be starting at the wrong end. It is not just that unionised workers mop up some of the surplus that is not going into investment. Perhaps the function of unions within capitalism is to be constantly obtaining a larger share for the workers in order to stimulate investment for the purpose of raising productivity and thus bringing profits back to the previous amount. And the decline of unions has thus contributed to the sickness of capitalism.
