I am in fundamental agreement with this statement by the WSM. Although I have not yet formally left the CAHWT it is clear it has no future as a unitary national campaign. Something new is needed to fight the water charges and other attacks on working people being carried out in the name of “austerity”.
The Cobh local group of the CAHWT decided at our meeting last night to change into a general anti-austerity campaign with the name “Cobh Says No to Austerity”. Cobh will be attending the Cork CAHWT regional delegate meeting this coming Friday with the aim of connecting with other groups and individuals who also want to move in this direction on the basis of a truly democratic delegated structure based on strong grassroots groups in local communities (which as the WSM statement points out only existed in theory for most of the CAHWT).
In this spirit I look forward to working alongside the WSM comrades in a new anti-austerity campaign in the near future.
