Comment on Aftershocks from the LPT… by richotto

Its always being said by those on the left that democracy is more than being accountable at elections every four or five years. You can see a discernable conversation between mainstream parties and the electorate and adjustments in policies occouring as a result. It seems hard to think of Joe Higgins interacting with the public and responding to a groundswell of concerns as other politicions do. That can be a strength if you happen to think hes right and should’nt be flexible, or a weakness of being stubborn if you don’t agree.
My own view is that SP were blessed with the water charges issue being mishandled and that gave Higgins his seat in the Dail and subsequent profile out of proportion to the support for the party as an entity. Once his presence is gone what then?
