I am tempted to point to a person like Adh Mor who was self educated yet an incisive analyst available to many a faction.
Who is this generation’s Adh Mor?
On economic policy I have a suspicion and am really open to correction on this but if an economist went to the Socialist Party, Communist Party , SWP etc etc and said they’d work for them would they be welcomed to work as an economist using graphs and maths, models and the whole armoury of economics. Would the Socialists consider what might be an appropriate multipier for their budget.
I have a suspicion that they would consider that not trying to fix capitalism but using the very language and tools of capitalism. To me a mistake – sure economics and maths is as inherently capitalist as pen and paper but none the less I would be surprised its the case.
